G05 / TRAVEL BASICS

Onsen and bathing etiquette

Read each facility’s rules and ask before entering if anything is unclear.

01

Read the facility’s own rules

Check the official information for facilities, things to bring and admission conditions. Rules can differ between bathhouses. Ask the facility directly about reservations or additional charges before visiting.

02

Prepare before entering

Read the instructions for storing belongings and using towels. Leave items that are not allowed in the bathing area in the designated place. Follow photography rules and respect other visitors’ privacy.

03

Use the bathing area considerately

Washing and rinsing off soap before entering the shared bath is customary. Keep towels and hair out of the bath water. Leave washing areas and equipment ready for the next person, and follow the facility’s posted instructions.

04

Ask staff when unsure

If equipment or a sign is unfamiliar, use the rules card to ask before using it. This guide cannot determine whether a particular facility is suitable for you. It does not provide medical advice or assess health suitability.
