Shimane
Shimane Prefecture, located in the Chugoku region of western Japan, is a land steeped in mythology and ancient history. It's home to Izumo Taisha, one of Japan's oldest and most significant Shinto shrines, believed to be a gathering place for deities. The prefecture's capital, Matsue, known as the "City of Water," features a beautifully preserved feudal castle and scenic canals. Shimane also offers the unique opportunity to explore the Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The rugged coastline along the Sea of Japan, including the dramatic cliffs of the Oki Islands, adds to its natural allure. For foreign tourists, Shimane Prefecture is a gateway to a less-traveled, deeply spiritual side of Japan, rich in folklore and natural beauty.
